53 - 6 Video Editing Tips & Tricks for Beginners – 2022 Guide

In today’s technology-driven world, textual content is ignored by most internet users. Studies show users connect more with a brand because of the video content. As a result, the demand for Video Ads and Video Content has increased.

However, this being a competitive industry, creating a niche for oneself is critical. Influencers and brands alike have to show the customers/clients their Unique Selling Proposition (USP) to be on the top. And you can do this by presenting quality content.

No, we are not talking about the script or the content per se here.

We are talking about the quality of the video created and uploaded on YouTube, Instagram, or Facebook that connects the individual with the public. Because however good your content may be, if the presentation is not good enough, getting the required impact is difficult.

Several online video editor tutorials found on the internet are time-consuming and often irrelevant for beginners. Since they talk about advanced ways of editing and skip the basics, learning video editing using these online video editors can be challenging and frustrating.

But do not fret. We are here to make life easy for the newcomers, as we share six inside tips and tricks to become a pro in video editing. Of course, this is possible only if the shared tips and tricks are followed with patience.

To become a pro video editor, practice and continuous learning are crucial.

  1. Storytelling Skills: The main aim of any video is to tell an excellent, aesthetically pleasing, and compelling story. And this is possible with accurate editing and mixing. We believe a good storyteller can be a good editor. If we know what the video is about and have a clear picture of how it should be perceived, editing a video with the help of an online video editor becomes comparatively easy. The many online video editors allow users to cut and correct the order of the video with ease to get the perfect result.
  2. Select the Right Video Editing Tool: With the advent of the internet and the increased popularity of social media, there has been a steady rise in the number of online video editors available. Though they seem similar, every online video editor has some differences. With this in mind, it is essential to select the correct software that would be a) easy to use, b) matches your preferences and requirements. For example: if you wish to create a simple video with fewer changes, any online video editor should work fine. If there is a requirement for many changes and editing, a more professional online video editor should be used.
  3. Pick the Right Device: As a beginner, investing in complex and costly devices is impossible. Yet, we suggest investing in a faster computer, with a fast storage drive. Also, as a beginner, 4GB RAM should be sufficient, as almost all online video editors work fine with a 4GB RAM computer. However, getting an 8GB RAM or above is advised for faster editing. Note the higher the RAM size, the quicker the video can be processed and edited. Other than faster computers, investing in SSD, video cards, and a premium processor is beneficial in the long run.
  4. Organize Your Data: Discipline and organizing skills are essential to being a good video editor. Hence, it is better to inculcate the habit of bifurcating the data according to the projects from the beginning. Being organized is crucial to avoid confusion while working, especially as you grow your clientele. Also, it is advised to make backups of your projects and videos to prevent losing the project owing to technical or human error. To save and organize the data 321 rule is essential. The 321 rule states that the video editor must keep three copies of the files in 2 different locations. At least one copy/backup should be in a different physical place from other locations.
  5. Use Keyboard Shortcuts: Most online video editors allow keyboard shortcuts. This lets you utilize and accommodate it to your needs and requirements. Also, to make work more manageable, you can, at a later stage, invest in a video editing keyboard like Final Cut Pro X Keyboard, Avid Media Composer Keyboard, Adobe Premiere Pro CC Keyboard. All these keyboards are software-specific, with different keyboard shortcut icons.
  6. Good Music: A video is not just about the visuals; appropriate music is also essential to increase its significance. E.g., if you are editing a suspense thriller movie and adding a piece of comedy music as the background score, the video would lose the impact, correct? Hence, it is essential to add good music in the right scenario to leave a lasting effect on the audience’s mind. Though most online video editors provide free music options, good music comes at a cost. We recommend using royalty-free music.

We hope these tips and tricks will help you take your first step in the world of video editing without any apprehension and help you change your status from a beginner to a pro quickly.
